Our work through our Peace & Justice Team
1. Haitian Relief Efforts: Public, private and church-related agencies are scrambling to meet the desperate needs of the people devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. As always, Lutherans are on the front lines in times of disaster. Learn more about the work of ELCA International
2. Disaster Response (ELCA.org/HaitiEarthquake) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR.org) and consider making a donation to help relieve the suffering.
3. The Ethics of Food: Interested in the part you play in World Hunger? Wish to be a World Hunger advocate? Explore how personal food choices and public policy impact the environment, the economy, personal health as well as neighbors near and far. An Ethics of Food seminar will be presented on March 20 at Walnut Hill Lutheran Church, Dallas, 9:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. Info contact Pastor Chuck Hubbard (Chuck.Hubbard@yahoo.com). Proposed Department of Peace: There is a new initiative in congress to create a Department of Peace to address our war-weary world with the resources and talent needed to learn and practice skills for negotiation, dialog and conflict management. Our synod’s Public Witness Goal Team has joined the conversation about this proposal and offers a perspective. To read their comments go to NTNL.org / Congregations / Working for Justice.
4. Malaria Initiative: Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease that kills more than one million people a year. The 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly voted overwhelmingly to support the Lutheran Malaria Initiative (including a fund-raising goal of $75 million) to eliminate malaria in south-Saharan Africa by 2015. The ELCA will work with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), Lutheran World Relief (LWR), and the United Nations Foundation. Info contact ELCA.org/Malaria.
5. Texas Impact: The NT-NL Synod is a member of Texas Impact – an ecumenical and interfaith organization located in Austin that seeks to educate and advocate for policies and laws that are humane, just and consistent with religious values. Texas Impact has added its voice to debates about the environment, health care, criminal justice, disaster and economic life. They urge you to stay informed and to use their resources on public issues. Info contact TexasImpact.org.
Truly God’s Work. Our Hands.
